  • A step forward: a new and greener option

Recycled material XRP Cruise is a high-end laminate, where the main parts of the material are made from recycled polyester, that is the UV-protective film, the taffeta, and the polyester fibers. The combination of black polyester fibers and white taffeta makes up for a greyish look. The XRP cruise comes in 3 qualities where the heaviest is further stabilized with UPE virgin fibers. Be one of the firsts to get your hands on this exciting new material. We are thrilled to be able to offer yet another EKKO option, the XRP cruise laminate. The test we have made on a Dehler 38SQ in cooperation with our German colleagues were very persuasive. The material is used for tri-optimal layouts and in our testing, it proved to be very form stable, with no optical difference to other laminates made from virgin material. Competitive alternative Elvstrøm Sails has a range of other high-end polyester laminates in the portfolio today but with the new addition we are now able to offer the cruising customer an eco-friendlier choice, and even at the same price level as comparable laminates. “We hope that the fact, that you do not really have to consider the price issue on this one, will make the decision to go for the more sustainable version very easy”, Flemming Christensen explains. • What is a good cruising sail?

Passionate sailor and sail advisor, William Friis-Møller, gives his best advice and tips on characteristics of the optimal sail for cruising. “In general, we see a rising demand for easy-to-handle products and solutions. Convenient solutions that make the sail easy to handle even for the small crew, e.g. the husband and wife heading out for the summer tour. Convenience is a key driver in the development of today’s sail design at Elvstrøm Sails and can be built into the sail design in several ways. “One of the more obvious ones is the sail battens. The battens improve the shape of the sail and support the roach ensuring the aerodynamic characteristic of the sail. But they don´t exactly ease the handling. The trick is to design the sail with as few battens as possible, and that all comes down to the expert knowledge of the sail maker.” In terms of convenience, furling systems are top nudge. “At Elvstrøm Sails, we have pioneered the development within furling systems and keep on refining solutions for our furling systems. “You should be aware that even within furling sails there is a wealth of opportunities in terms of sail cloth. The choice of sail cloth has an impact on the handling. The cruisers typically ask for a sail that is easy to fold, furl and pack. And many don´t realize that our EPEX membranes are also a very good choice for furling systems. We are often asked if the material can really furl-in easily and the answer is yes indeed! In fact, the smoother the surface of the sail is, the easier it furls in. And that is exactly the case with an EPEX membrane. Durability and Balance The sail cloth itself also has an impact on the durability and the performance of the sail. Both parameters worth looking out for. All our sail material combinations have an indicator from 1-10 on the durability and performance helping you to find best suitable combination for your sailing preference. “When you choose a cruising sail, there are several sail design and sail making solutions to look out for. A factor that has a huge impact on the comfort of sailing is the balance of the boat. The flatter a sail is designed, the less it heels and the more comfort you will gain sailing. The sail will be designed to stay free from the rig as much as possible, the area of the sail aligned to the specific boat and the reefing options built with an eye to the comfort as well. These are just a few of the things that needs to be taken into consideration when designing a long-lasting comfortable cruising sail.” At Elvstrøm Sails our starting point is always the needs of the customer. From here on we tailor make the final solution. Don’t be afraid to challenge your sail maker on solutions making sure you get the sail of your dream. • Sail Maintenance: Take your sails further

During its life, a sail has to take huge mechanical impacts. Your sail has been designed to withstand those impacts. Damages occur, when a sail has to take on loads for which it has not been designed. To avoid damages, here are some tips: Avoid fluttering sails or leeches Whenever you notice a fluttering leech, tighten the leech lines. To avoid fluttering sails, reef in time. Avoid creases Make sure you either roll or fold your sail correctly
.(Zig-Zag) .Ideally an EPEX sail should be rolled from the top to foot, when going in to winter storage. This will avoid any permanent creases . Use patches Wherever your sail may touch parts of the boat, like spreaders, reelings, pulpits, radars, etc, use insignia patches to protect your sail from unnecessary friction If you need any sail help or advise, as your local Elvstrøm Sail and Service-Point, contact us at Yachting Partners Malta for a service check. • Elvstrøm Sails launch new Cable Free Code Zero

Elvstrøm Sails are announcing the launch of a new Cable Free Code Zero for racing and performance cruising yachts. The Cable Free Code Zero has significant performance advantages. Made from Elvstrøm’s EPEX laminate membrane, which is fully guaranteed, it has strengthening yarns in the load lines enabling the sail to be furled, without a heavy cable. It can be flown with significantly less halyard tension than a cabled Code Zero, which enables the sail to project further forwards. This helps create a straighter, (non-flapping) leech and means the sail works across wider sailing angles too. Following a season of testing with the Lady Mariposa Racing Team, on board their Ker 46, it has contributed to their success with overall victory in the 2018 RORC Offshore Points Championships. Team Manager, Dan Hardy gives the sail a big thumbs up, reporting, “The new Cable Free Code Zero is a huge step forwards for these furling sails. Without the heavy cable in the luff, the sail is free to project positively, massively improving the flying shape of the sail. We are finding the Cable Free Code Zero much easier to furl and unfurl compared to our previous sail with a cable. It’s very versatile, with a massive cross-over in our downwind sail wardrobe.” Significantly for both racing and high performance cruising yachts, removing the cable brings many other benefits. It reduces both the additional expense and weight of having a heavy cable on board. The sail is lighter to move around. Plus, storage is easier too as the sail can be packed into a bag without issues of having to snake and store a very stiff cable down below decks. Hardy points out, “The sail is much easier to store in the bag. And also, to get it on and off the foredeck as the furled sail can bend and be flaked much more easily, than with a cable.” Additionally, being able to fly the sail with far less halyard tension than conventionally used to get the pointing angles from a cabled sail has other benefits. This reduces the loads required on your mast, halyard sheaves or the need for reinforced bowsprits and fittings, potentially saving on equipment maintenance and build costs too.
